To better meet the demand of Macao residents for cross-border payment, the People’s Bank of China (PBC), following the approach of providing livelihood-related payment services first, released a string of measures to facilitate payment on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
The first is to promote the use of Macao e-wallets in the Chinese mainland. To that end, the PBC supports users of the Mobile Banking App of the Bank of China (BOC) Macau Branch and Mpay, a local mobile payment application of Macao Pass, to make offline payment via the QR codes of mainland merchants in BOC’s payment network. In this way, Macao residents who work, travel or live in the Chinese mainland could enjoy convenient small-value mobile payment services.
The second is to implement the pilot program of Account Opening Witness Service (AOWS) in Macao, which allows Macao residents to open Category-II and III individual mainland accounts with pilot banks in Macao, thus bringing more convenient for Macao residents to access payment services through mainland banks.
Next, the PBC will maintain close communication and cooperation with the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM), so as to ensure the smooth implementation of favorable payment policies for Macao and to support the development of an integrated living community of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
